Design process - The intricate layout of Indian streets, often likened to a labyrinth, it greatly influences our design approach. By considering the context of the site and the diverse backgrounds of the children, we envisioned a school where the distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces is fluid. This creates an environment where everything serves as a playground for a young child’s learning and growth. In examining this urban pattern, we identified communal areas, similar to squares and raised platforms, which have historically played a vital role in fostering community interaction and activity. These spaces serve as crucial gathering points, bringing people together and acting as hubs of communal engagement. In terms of sustainability, we have utilized multiple strategies throughout the school in order to reduce our impact on the environment, and to create a more holistic surrounding for growth and development of individuals.
Multiple courtyards in the building help create more interactive spaces for the students. One of the major advantages of these is the natural light and ventilation in all of the classrooms, which adds to the holistic environment of the school. Stack effect allows the hot air to travel upwards, leaving the structure cooler naturally. The upper floors have classrooms, and laboratories, while the ground floor is a mix of classrooms for younger students, common areas, and administration.
Design description - The ground floor layout is different, with sunken assembly areas, a skill centre, and classrooms for younger students. Upper floors have classrooms, laboratories, and classes for co-curricular activities divided into blocks with admin blocks, washrooms and classes.
In order to avoid a linear circulation, each block can be accessed individually through staircases located near the courtyards. On the upper floors, all the blocks are connected by corridors running on either sides. On the ground floor the difference in levels allows for more explorative movement. Additionally, there is vehicular movement for buses with parking.
